Catalytic Converter Anti-Theft Alarm

Thieves are targeting catalysts located in the exhaust system under the vehicle because of the high value of the precious metals they contain.

Thieves simply cut the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipe of a parked car and sell them on to scrap metal dealers.

Taller vehicles (4x4s) are particularly vulnerable as the converters are more accessible. Because they tend to have larger engines, they contain more of the precious metals too.
Information obtained from 40 UK police forces revealed thefts UK had more than doubled between 2010 and 2012.

Some parts of the country saw a significant rise – in Bedfordshire and South Yorkshire thefts increased more than tenfold.

They more than tripled across Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Leicestershire during the same period.

A Department of Transport spokesman said it was not illegal to drive without a catalytic converter but you could be stopped by the police and prosecuted for breaking the law on harmful emissions. Most vehicles will also fail a MOT test without a catalytic converter.

A Hi Vu Fresnel lens press-fits inside the truck’s passenger side window and is held firmly in place by its own ‘peel-back’ self-adhesive.

The Fresnel lens provides an extra downwards view for the HGV driver so that at a glance he can see any vulnerable road user that might be hidden in the mirror blind spot, alongside his passenger door.

From 1 September 2014, the DVSA has vowed to take a ‘more robust approach’ to commercial vehicles with defective fuel systems.

Following a Highways Agency (HA) report on the effect of diesel fuel spills on the road network, the Department for Transport (DfT) has asked DVSA to review the sanctions issued at the roadside for vehicles with defective fuel tanks and systems.

The DVSA has reviewed sanctions for defective fuel systems and agreed some changes with DfT. In a statement on its Matters of Testing blog, the Agency said, “The main difference is that we’ll now only issue immediate prohibitions for defective fuel systems and leaks. We have communicated these to the trade associations and updated the changes into the Categorisation of Defects and Enforcement Sanctions Policy”.
