Crash for Cash Incidents Increasing By 50% Over The Past Year

With reports of crash for cash incidents increasing by 50% over the past year, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) is warning at-work drivers to watch out for crash for cash scammers.

Don Armour, FTA manager of fleet information, said: “Regretfully it is becoming more essential for freight operators to rely on security equipment and devices to defend their position in court, and ensure security of their drivers.

“These ‘crash for cash’ incidents are yet another obstacle for professional drivers to contend with in their day to day work, but security equipment is another tool in their armoury to combat this sort of criminality.”

The Freight Transport Association has warned professional drivers to be on the lookout for ‘crash for cash’ fraud – in which accidents are deliberately caused in order to file compensation for whiplash – following recent press reports that incidents have increased by almost half over the past year.

FTA highlights motor insurer reports which suggested that 865 dishonest claims are being made every week, worth £10.4 million – but says the impact of ‘crash for cash’ is likely to be lessened by the proliferation of in-vehicle cameras.

Truck Camera Defends Against Road Rage

On Board camera technology is becoming an tool for road using companies to combat many circumstances that happen on UK roads every day.

Truck operating companies are often seen to be to the guilty party, with no evidence the blame is usually laid with the truck, but with a witness camera the blame can esaily be proved.

A recent incident caught on a witness camera is as follows, a motorist swerves into the path of a lorry in a bizarre road rage incident. The Ford Fiesta driver almost causes a pile-up on a busy dual carriage after driving right in front of the HGV and opening his door just before the two vehicles collide. He then jumps from his car and starts remonstrating with the innocent lorry driver while standing on the fast lane of the dual carriageway.

Thousands of these road rage incidents happen every day in Britain – often resulting in disputed insurance claims where each driver blames the other.

Without an On Board Camera, it would be just be a case of one driver’s word against another – with a messy insurance claim dragging on for months with no clear blame established. With the Witness Camera, it is clear from outset that the Fiesta driver is clearly to blame.

Having a Dash Incident Camera installed in a vehicle would tell the story of a road traffic accident. Continually recording forward views a on board camera will be date and time stamped. “Seeing is Believing” is aide automotive’s moto!!

Diesel Fuel Spill – DVSA More Robust

Diesel Fuel Spill

aide auto Offer Spill Valves for The TP Anti Syph

From 1 September 2014, the DVSA has vowed to take a ‘more robust approach’ to commercial vehicles with defective fuel systems.

Following a Highways Agency (HA) report on the effect of diesel fuel spills on the road network, the Department for Transport (DfT) has asked DVSA to review the sanctions issued at the roadside for vehicles with defective fuel tanks and systems.

The DVSA has reviewed sanctions for defective fuel systems and agreed some changes with DfT. In a statement on its Matters of Testing blog, the Agency said, “The main difference is that we’ll now only issue immediate prohibitions for defective fuel systems and leaks. We have communicated these to the trade associations and updated the changes into the Categorisation of Defects and Enforcement Sanctions Policy”.

aide automotive have been marketing a Retro Fit Spill Valve for the TP Anti Syph for the past 4 years.

With the above DVSA stance the Anti Siphon spill valve would be an excellent belt and braces approach to faulty or lost fuel caps.

TP Spill Valve is a retro fit valve for the TP Anti Siphon product range to stop diesel spillages. Easy to fit and ideal as an environmental proactive measurement, this simple step will make roads safer for all users.

Trailer Reversing System With Auto Braking

September 30th, 2014 Comments off

Truck & Trailer Auto Reverse & Braking System Prevents Crash Damage.

A lorry driver making deliveries to Marks & Spencer was left red-faced after tearing down part of a wall.

He became stuck reversing into the back of the Brighton store yesterday morning and struck the wall. When he moved forward again, it collapsed.

Bob Higham, who lives in Regent Hill, where the accident happened, claimed lorries caused numerous accidents in the area’s narrow streets and called for them to be banned from the city centre.

He said: “They don’t always knock walls down but there’s scrapes.

“I think big lorries like this should be banned. They should only allow smaller, fixed wheelbase vehicles in.”

Trailer Reversing System “BackStop” automatically applies the brakes when an object such as a concrete pillar or a person becomes an obstruction, or is in close proximity to the rear of the vehicle.

Trailer Reversing System “BackStop” activates when the vehicle is in reverse. Continuously monitoring at a distance up to 3m behind the vehicle, BackStop will automatically apply the brakes if any of the sensors detect an obstacle, leaving sufficient time for a person to move or the vehicle realigned.

Truck & Trailer BackStop can be retro fitted to any rigid truck or trailer by our onsite service engineers.

Here What Camera Users Say about Witness Cameras!

aide automotive offer a variety of incident or Driver Incident Cameras for commercial vehicles.

In a recent feature on the Commercial Motor website, read what some users said.

Case study: Massey Wilcox
Massey Wilcox has installed Driver Incident cameras across its 60-vehicle fleet over the past nine months, costing £180 each. “It’s solely to have evidence if there’s an accident, helping us prove innocence or guilt,” explains MD Robert Wilcox. He believes most sensible hauliers will eventually install them because of insurance considerations.

His company recently avoided a potentially expensive whiplash claim after one of its cameras showed how a motorist cut across the front of the driver on a roundabout. He says cameras also help highlight when drivers are in the wrong, so they can learn from their mistakes.

Case study: DHL Supply Chain

Tim Slater, MD, Transport UK and Ireland at DHL Supply Chain, says the company has more than 4,000 forward-facing cameras installed across its fleet, which is one of the key elements of its transport strategy.

He says: “By installing cameras, we aim to make our vehicles the safest and most efficient on the road. The cameras protect our drivers and assets by allowing us to understand the circumstances of an incident, and have had a positive effect on driver behaviour both behind the wheel and as a training tool. We believe that all collisions and incidents are preventable and using initiatives such as forward-facing cameras helps us to reduce these significantly.”

Automatic Truck & Trailer Braking System

April 24th, 2014 Comments off

Recently Glasgow City Council were fined £20,000 following the death of a pensioner after he was struck by a reversing refuse vehicle in the city centre.

Malcolm McCulloch, 71, a retired dock worker from Glasgow, was walking across Holm Street, Glasgow, when he was struck by the reversing lorry on 10 August 2012. He suffered severe chest and pelvic injuries and later died in hospital.

The incident was investigated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and a prosecution brought against the council for serious safety failings.

An inspection of the vehicle by HSE mechanical specialists found no defects, and its warning beacon and siren were working correctly. However, there was a blind spot, around 2.2 metres wide, that was not covered by the CCTV camera or wing mirrors. Accordingly neither the driver nor the labourer would have seen Mr McCulloch stepping into the path of the reversing lorry. A reversing assistant should have been used to guide the driver while reversing and to prevent pedestrians such as Mr McCulloch from being able to cross the road as the lorry reversed.

aide automotive offer a Radar Sensor System. BackStop, The Automatic Truck & Trailer Braking System automatically applies the brakes when an object such as a person is in close proximity to the rear of the vehicle. This is achieved by measuring the phase shift, BackStop Radar can accurately map and detect people or objects behind the vehicle. BackStop “Automatic Truck & Trailer Braking System” takes away the chance of human error as in the above incident.
