IRU’s Guidance to Prevent Transport Fuel Theft

To address the rising issue of fuel theft in commercial transport, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) has unanimously adopted new guidelines for road transport operators based on monitoring, prevention and reporting, and recommended their immediate implementation.fuel-pump
The guidelines highlight the importance of having a fuel inventory, as well as comparing vehicle usage records to the amount of fuel used. Moreover, active monitoring enables transport operators to rapidly identify when a theft has occurred.
In order to prevent fuel theft, the guidelines recommend:
Regular use of secure parking – As many thefts happen in unsecured parking areas, “defensive parking” is strongly advised, which includes locating and using secure parking areas, available through the IRU’sTRANSPark app.
Use of fuel theft devices – Aftermarket products can make vehicle fuel tanks less vulnerable, including locking fuel caps, anti-siphon devices and a device linked to the vehicle alarm that monitors the fuel tank and sounds if there is a sudden drop in the fuel level without the engine running.
Installation of security lighting – Road transport companies are advised to install effective security lighting on company premises to make certain areas safer, as well as parking vehicles in a way that allows clear visibility of fuel tanks at night, for passers-by, neighbours and the police.
Post appropriate security signage – Displaying visible signs that indicate the use of video surveillance or any other form of security, is one of the most effective forms of security according to scientific studies.
Finally, the guidelines highlight the importance of reporting fuel theft to the police and insurance companies. This serves the dual function of identifying national hotspots, which can lead to an increase in prosecution, and also increases awareness in areas if reports are sent to the local press.
Commenting on the new guidelines, IRU Secretary General, Umberto de Pretto, said, “Adopting them was the easy part. The real work is now ahead of us, which means helping raise awareness in the industry, so that road transport operators everywhere can effectively take action and put a stop to fuel theft.

Fuel Theft – Bus driver admits £9k

A bus driver steels thousands of pounds of Fuel from Bakers Dolphin over a three-year period.

The accused was fired by the Weston-based coach firm after 38 years service once the theft was discovered in April.

Michael Collins, prosecuting, told magistrates at North Somerset Courthouse on Monday that the bus driver had prompted suspicion by turning up to work regularly 30 minutes before he was due to start at 5.30am.

He would fill jerry cans with diesel before driving them back in his bus to his home in Highbridge. Having dropped them off, he would then start working and his criminal activity was not spotted because the early start meant he was never late.

He was caught after the firm installed extra CCTV cameras to his vehicle and checked vehicle logging records.

Upon arrest, he admitted taking an estimated £9,000 worth of diesel.

This information is based on figures obtained from the Metropolitan Police.

The West London borough had a total of 175 reports between 2009 and 2012, but only five prosecutions.

Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark and Merton also emerge in the top five boroughs for Fuel Theft.

The Met said the majority of thefts were from commercial haulage vehicles which were prominent in Hounslow.

It said the area served both Heathrow Airport and Central London and advised that parking goods vehicles in areas with good lighting and CCTV was the most effective way of reducing opportunities for thieves to syphon diesel.

Mis Fuelling Not Covered By Insurance

June 13th, 2013 Comments off

Nearly a quarter of motor breakdown policies do not cover misfuelling, according to new research by financial research company Defaqto.

The analysis of 288 policies showed that 23 per cent exclude cover if you fill your car up with the wrong fuel.

According to the AA, more than 100,000 motorists put the wrong fuel in their car every year.

Meanwhile, it was found that 14 per cent of motor breakdown policies do not provide cover if you run out of fuel.

Mike Powell, Insight Analyst for General Insurance at Defaqto, said: “Drivers putting the wrong fuel into a vehicle not only face a huge repair bill but may also find that their breakdown policy doesn’t provide cover for their vehicle to be towed to a garage.

“Even those motor breakdown policies that do cover such an eventuality will tend to find that the extent of the coverage is limited to towing the car to a garage or to their destination.”

Following a successful retro fit to in use Ginster delivery vans, Ginsters Pasties have now made the Solo Diesel Mis Fuelling device a standard fit to all new vans.

Mis-fuelling takes place when you put petrol in a diesel vehicle. The number of diesel cars on the road has increased, and therefore so have the problems and associated costs of misfueling. Putting petrol in your diesel car is easily done as the nozzle on a diesel pump has a larger diameter than an Unleaded fuel nozzle, so the Unleaded fits into the filler neck of the Diesel vehicle without any problems.

Mis Fuelling an AdBlue Truck Tank

April 26th, 2010 No comments

Truck Operators are seeing a new problem since the arrival of AdBlue.

Mis Fuelling the AdBlue tank with Diesel is a growing problem and major concern as the repair costs are resulting in thousands.

Some say you can’t get the diesel pump spout into the AdBlue tank filler neck–they’re different sizes. You don’t have to you only need to stick the nozzle into the hole pull the trigger and the splash-back from the gun as the cut-out works still goes into the tank and it’s enough to ruin the AdBlue.

AdBlue is highly susceptible to contamination and as little as 10ml of Oil present in a 70 litre fill can corrupt the system causing irreversible damage.

aide automotive will soon introduce an AdBlue Mis fuelling Device to stop Diesel contamination.
